There are many flowers blooming in New York City at this time. Flowers are growing in the concrete jungle, and giving power to the people of New York City.

However, these flowers are not real, nor fake - they are the artwork of Michael De Feo.

"Around 1992, when I was studying graphic design and advertising at art school, I was drawing many pictures with a thick brush. Then, a flower was born. I really liked it. So, I made a silk screen of the print and ran off hundreds of flowers of various colors. I began to paste them all over."

On the traffic light, on the newspaper stand, on the bus, on the truck. Using paste and a brush, he pastes his flowers close to the ground. So far, in New York, Seattle, Boston, and in San Francisco, he has made over 7,000 sheets of flowers bloom.

"A lot of people look at my artwork, and that's why I like the street. Especially in Manhattan, people from all over the world come and there is always something new happening. There is no other exciting place like this. I feel very good working on my project in this kind of big city."

The artwork does not carry Michael's name or a title. From out of nowhere, Michael's flowers appear. For the people who walk the streets, the flowers are a pleasant mystery.

Michael told us that people say, "we do not know the artist, but they are familiar with the flower. That's interesting, and besides that, a friend who I haven't seen in a long time may see my flower on the street. And, he will think that I was just there. This project is like my `footprint'."

The flower is drawn with thick, strong, and simple lines. The picture communicates without words.

"A child in a baby stroller can enjoy my flower, but it's not limited to children, adults are pleased as well. One time, a truck driver shouted, `You are the flower man! I like your work. Please paste one on my truck.'" Michael said, "What makes me happy is to see the smiling face of the people who see my flower. There are always flowers at the important time in our life, like wedding and also funeral. Flowers are very pure. Therefore, people can share ones feelings with flowers."

Michael teaches computer graphics at the high school in CT as an art teacher. Students like him very much. He said, "I like children very much. Of course they are often mischief, they are really pure."

He grew up in a large family of Italian immigrants. He decided to be an artist when he was in junior high. "I always knew my life's calling would be about art. I want to share my positive feeling through my artwork. This is my goal and also a starting point as an artist."

His other projects are going on "Flowers on Currency" and "TV Stickers". He said, "By circulating the flower stamped currency all over the world, people can encounter them anywhere. Regarding to TV stickers, I replace the heads of kids on street signs everywhere. Influence of television or the media is inestimable. More children spend a lot of time watching TV after school. My TV sticker project is a kind of warning against these facts."

He is hoping to bloom his flowers in Japan someday. He said, "Until then, please enjoy my artwork at my web site."
